It seems as if there are advocates and activists for every illness except one: Chronic prostatitis. This deficiency seems especially glaring in light of last week's proclamation by the Unites States president that September is prostate cancer awareness month. This needs to change. We need better awareness and common effort if we are ever to defeat chronic prostatitis.
To help raise awareness of chronic prostatitis, we hereby call on the United States president to issue a joint proclamation that September is also National Chronic Prostatitis Awareness Month. We've even prepared a draft proclamation for his consideration. Awareness is not just for prostate cancer. If you care about the suffering of men with chronic prostatitis, then link to this proclamation.
Let's get this started.Thank you.
Suggested Draft Presidential Proclamation -- National Chronic Prostatitis Awareness Month
Chronic prostatitis accounts for millions of American men going to the doctor every year. While it is not typically a fatal disease, chronic prostatitis can ruin lives. National Chronic Prostatitis Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to fortify our obligation to development of better ways to prevent, manage, and eliminate chronic prostatitis.
Nobody knows the reasons that give rise to chronic prostatitis. Certainly better communication and sharing of knowledge will help the victims of chronic prostatitis to make more rational, intelligent choices about their illness and health. Scientists do not yet know which factors put a man at risk for chronic prostatitis, although some factors, including certain infectious diseases, may be involved. Scientists also do not understand the role of behavior, wellness, and lifestyle in the development and epidemiology of chronic prostatitis.
We know that all patients receive antibiotics as initial treatment and that these antibiotics do not help for very long. The same is true for alpha-blockers, prostate massage, and many other conventional and alternative treatments. We need more effective solutions. We must work together to improve our level of knowledge and encourage men with chronic prostatitis to share their symptoms and difficulties with theiri doctors.
Until we know how to eliminate chronic prostatitis, the White House will help to raise awareness of chronic prostatitis and assure that the National Institutes of Health have the resources they need to find the cure.
As we observe National Chronic Prostatitis Month, we support the men and their families whose lives are being devastated by chronic prostatitis. We work with the advocates and activists and scientists and researchers who so diligently strive to bring a better day. Join us to raise awareness of chronic prostatitis so we can move ahead and get rid of this terrible illness.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 2010 as National Chronic Prostatitis Awareness Month. I encourage all citizens, Government agencies includng the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control, private enterprises, and volunteer groups to unite and cooperate.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of August, 2010.
